How Science Makes Faith Cooler: Part 2

The genius behind evolution:

Genesis 1:20-24 says that God spoke life-filled beings into existence. He said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures” and “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” (New Revised Standard Version)

For some reason we think that sounds contrary to evolution.

Darwinism states that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual’s ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. It has been used to describe even the beginnings of life and shows how the right combination of elements in the soil, or the water, under the right combinations of circumstances would start to produce animals and over millions of years bring them to what we see all around us today.

I think that matches Genesis pretty well. God said, “Let the waters bring forth… living creatures, and let …the land bring forth living creatures…” It sounds like God employed the land to do the hard work of bringing itself to fruition, perhaps under His direction.

I have degrees in Engineering and Industrial Design. I have seen mass production lines in the US and overseas, building everything from carefully woven wicker furniture, to plastic injection molded parts, to highly regulated airplane parts. I have never seen a production line as complete and intelligent as the one God set up on this earth. Not only does this production line create itself, it creates products that constantly improve themselves. And maybe He built it with just the right ingredients so that it would develop the creatures he desired to make. He let the ground bring them forth.

This bit of science just makes me think God is even more of a genius. He did not just design and create, but he made a production line that would design and create within itself the vision of what he wanted us to become.

We can use science to try and tear down scripture, or we can look how science can partner with scripture to lift it to new understandings, and make both disciplines so much cooler.
