POEM: Seize the normal day

Savor one last drench in bed.
Tempt yourself with coffee if that helps.
Now slide from the covers: 4, 3, 2, 1... GO!
But do not linger supine as life ticks away,
lest one paint stroke of this creative life be missed.
Yes, do carve out new innovations
and travel to try new curries.
But do not neglect home,
where you have wrapped yourself
with opportunities to love your people.
Flirt and kiss and joke, as a rule.
Share a smile, such an easy win.
Craft sustainable habits
that will make earth more glorious each day.
It is as much the big moments
as how you do the million smalls.
And of yourself, always grow.
So that in old age you are kinder, more curious
than those that became ruthless skeptics.
What is your masterpiece ministry?
What will people say at your funeral?
What will strangers say of you,
and acquaintances, but most importantly
those to whom you give your first smile
After you slide out of bed?
What will they say of your one shot
at this creative life?
